PHL inks partnership deal to improve Pinoy kids’ education in Sabah

Undocumented Filipino children in Sabah stand to benefit from a recently signed memorandum of understanding between the Philippine government and six Sabah-based alternative learning centers (ALCs).

The partnership, signed last August 26, aims to improve the capacity of the ALCs to provide basic literacy to Filipino children who have no access to regular education.

A news release from the Philippine Embassy in Malaysia said this will be done through capacity-building activities; professional, technical and administrative advice; and the provision of learning and instructional materials.

There are 2,234 school-aged undocumented Filipino children currently enrolled in six participating ALCs, the embassy said. The participating ALCs are:

-- Learning Translation and Review Centre in Keningau
-- Sekolah Sukarela Persatuan MAFIL-KOFA in Keningau
-- Vision of Hope Learning Center in Keningau
-- Persatuan Kebajikan Pendidikan Kanak-Kanak Miskin or The Society for Education of Underprivileged Children in Lahad Datu and Semporna
-- Stairway to Hope Learning Center in Kota Kinabalu
-- Stairway to Success Learning Center in Sandakan

“Filipino children in Sabah are in a precarious situation and our initiatives are mere first steps in a long journey, but we are hopeful that with the dedication of all stakeholders, we will be able to transform through education the lives of these children for the better,” said Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia Eduardo Malaya, who signed the agreement on behalf of the Embassy.

Other improvements were discussed during the official visit of Filipino officials from August 26 to 27, especially in the areas of “education assessment, technical and vocational training, information technology, science and mathematics,” the embassy said. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
