Alert level 2 still raised in Yemen, embassy in Riyadh reminds Pinoys

The Philippine Embassy in Riyadh on Wednesday reminded Filipino nationals in Yemen that the country is still under Alert Level 2 amid "continued political and security tensions."

In a news release, the embassy advised Filipinos there "to restrict non-essential movement and avoid public places."

Deployment of newly-hired Filipino workers to Yemen is suspended with Alert Level 2, while those with existing contracts still allowed to return to their work there.

The Philippine government raised Alert Level 3 in Yemen in December 2013 after a deadly attack on the Defense Ministry that resulted in the deaths of more than 50 people, including sevel Filipino workers.

Two months later, it lowered the alert level in Yemen from 3 (voluntary repatriation) to 2 (restriction phase), upon the recommendation of the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh.

Crisis alert levels in other countries

As of July, the government has raised alert levels in at least 15 countries, most of which due to security situations in those areas:

Alert Level 4 (mandatory repatriation, total ban on OFW deployment) - Syria, Iraq (except Kurdistan), Egypt, Libya

Alert Level 3 (voluntary repatriation, total ban on OFW deployment) - South Sudan

Alert Level 2 (restriction phase, ban on deployment of new hires) - Yemen, Ukraine, Kenya

Alert Level 1 (precautionary phase, no deployment ban) - Lebanon, Venezuela, Kurdistan in Iraq, Thailand.

The government has also raised alert levels in the West African states of Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia due to the deadly Ebola virus outbreak.

The three African countries were placed under Alert Level 2 in July. The following month, the government said it would temporarily suspend sending Filipino workers there.  Rose-An Jessica Dioquino/RSJ, GMA News
