Pinay actress seeks funding for NYC acting school degree

An up-and-coming Filipina theater actress is seeking financial support to fund her education at the prestigious Julliard School in New York City.

Regina de Vera, 26, was one of the 18 out of 1,900 applicants from all over the world accepted for the school's four-year Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) in Acting program for academic term 2015 to 2016.

An accomplished actress, De Vera's audition granted her Total Financial Aid of $28,000 which, while impressive, leaves her in need of $61,290 more for various expenses including tuition, residence hall, books, supplies, transportation and insurance.

“This opportunity comes rarely in the lifetime of an artist especially for someone born and raised in the Philippines,” De Vera wrote on her Indiegogo page. “I am determined to pursue this path and hopefully make my country proud.”

Some of Juilliard's drama alumni include the late Robin Williams ("Dead Poets Society"), Kevin Spacey ("House of Cards"), Viola Davis ("How To Get Away From Murder"), and Anthony Mackie ("Captain America: The Winter Soldier").

The 2013 Gawad Buhay! Outstanding Female Lead Performance in A Play awardee said she used her childhood savings to audition for Juilliard in January.

“A few days after I submitted my pre-screening video last November, my mother spoke to me in my room. She explained to me that our family was not rich, and that this would not be a good time to shell out funds for someone to go all the way to New York City,” she said in an article on Manila Bulletin.

But the auditions pushed through and she was admitted to the MFA program two days before her 26th birthday.

The validation of her talent led her to two months of seeking funding from family, institutions, and possible benefactors. She turned to crowdfunding to help her cinch the gap by June 15.

Fulbright scholar and Ateneo de Manila University professor Missy Maramara said De Vera's talent will only prosper from the intensive training at Juilliard, which tops Hollywood Reporter's list of 25 top drama schools in the world.

“Reg is very committed to her art. She is a charming performer... disciplined and focused and will see this to its fulfillment,” Maramara told GMA News Online.

“Julliard will give her the intensive training she has always dreamed of. She makes us all very proud,” she added.

Donations can run as low as $1 at her Indiegogo page. Donors may also make their cash and check contributions through several payment options. —KBK, GMA News
