PHL envoy asks OFWs in Russia to hold off on recruiting countrymen

Philippine Ambassador to Russia Carlos Sorreta appealed to undocumented OFWs in Russia to stop the illegal recruitment of fellow Pinoys as the government was still working on a bilateral labor agreement with Moscow.
Sorreta said Duterte was set to talk with the Russian academe to develop a bilateral labor agreement.
Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III previously said that once signed, they would prepare the implementing rules and regulations to pave the way for the deployment of overseas Filipino workers to Russia.
Sorreta thus appealed to Filipinos already in Russia to stop illegal recruitment.
The envoy emphasized that it would help negotiations with Russia if the Philippines could demonstrate that its citizens could abide by the laws of the host country.
"At 'pag lalong lumalaki ang numero ng mga Pilipino dito, mas mahihirapan silang pumayag na 'yung nandito na ay gawing legal dahil 'yan po ay in the nature of an amnesty, at hindi pa nagbibigay ng amnesty ang Russia kahit kailan. Kailangan hindi palakihin 'yung madaming undocumented dito," Sorreta said.
"'Wag na muna hong mag-ilegal recruitment," he added. — Jamil Santos/DVM, GMA News
