Pinoy couple faces 6 months jail term in Bahrain

A court in Bahrain has sentenced a Filipino couple six months jail term for stealing thousands of dinars from an advertising agency, online Gulf Daily News reported Saturday.

The GDN report said that the court promulgated the verdict in the absence of the couple, who fled the country after spiriting away cash amounting BD4, 625 (P505,461.63), office equipment and supplies.

The couple, who both worked for the company, ran away with the money from their employer, including the cash for the salaries of co-workers, the GDN said.

The court also sentenced the husband aged 35, and wife, 39, another month in jail for staying in Bahrain illegally as they did not for not renew their residence permits.

It also ordered for the couple’s permanent deportation from Bahrain as soon as they completed their sentence should they decide come back and serve their punishment.

The couple’s employer told the police that he handed BD2, 000 (P218, 578) to the wife, who worked as a secretary, for staff wages and rent, the GDN said.

The employer said the couple fled with the money as well as the payments made by his company’s clients.

He said the couple also stole company letterheads, papers, documents, a computer, 500 pieces of compact discs and four hard discs.

Before fleeing, the couple encouraged their co-workers to file labor complaints against the company, the employer said. - GMANews.TV
