RP welfare officer in Saudi road mishap dies

A Filipino welfare officer who was seriously injured in a road accident in Saudi Arabia last December succumbed to his injuries Wednesday.

Online news site Arab News reported Thursday that Leonardo Eugenio Jr. was declared dead at 3 p.m. at the King Khaled Military City hospital in Hafr Al Batin.

The report said Eugenio's mother Josefa and sister Raquel Shimizu were with him at the hospital during the past few days but were unable to communicate with him as he remained comatose.

Josefa and Raquel arrived in Riyadh last Jan. 3.

Doctors said Eugenio suffered multiple fractures in his skull as a result of the accident.

Eugenio and Philippine Overseas Labor Office staff were motoring to Sakaka city in the northern region of Al Jouf when the accident happened in Hafr Al-Batin, about 700 km from Riyadh.

The other officers with Eugenio at the time of the accident included Jimmy Umag, Mario Agustin Menerio, Rene Literal, and Taib Dumado.

One of the rear tires of the team's Isuzu Trooper exploded and the vehicle overturned repeatedly along the highway. - GMANews.TV
