At least one more overseas Filipino worker in Taiwan was injured in an attack on a dormitory for Filipinos Saturday night.

One of the OFWs, Marissa de Guzman, said the incident occurred Saturday night when a group of Taiwanese suddenly broke into their dormitory.

"Kagabi... binasag ng sumalakay ang harap at pintuan ng dormitoryo (Last night, a group of Taiwanese broke into the dormitory)," she said in an interview on dzBB radio.

She said one of the OFWs was injured and may have suffered a fractured hand.

The dzBB report quoted de Guzman as saying the dormitory housed mostly Filipino workers.

It added the Filipino workers there will ask their employer to hire security guards to prevent a repeat of the incident.

Many Filipinos in Taiwan had been reporting instances of harassment by Taiwanese over the fatal shooting of a Taiwanese fisherman last May 9 in disputed waters.

In Malacañang, meanwhile, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte reiterated the Philippine government through the Manila Economic and Cultural Office will verify such reports and relay them to the appropriate Taiwanese authorities.

She also said OFWs who are legally employed are entitled to medical insurance.

“Nag-e-extend ng assistance ang MECO, either providing kung anong kailangan o kinokontak ang pamilya rito, and they make a report to the relevant ministry there para masimulan ang investigation para magkaroon ng hustisya sa report na na-verify na," she said on government-run dzRB radio.

Valte also said MECO managing director Antonio Basilio informed her the MECO staff is contacting its counterparts in Taiwan “para matigil ang ganitong sitwasyon at 'di magkaroon pa ng ganong insidente (so that the situation will end).”

Valte also said Basilio informed the Palace the MECO is “speaking to Filipino communities to apprise them of what happened, what the government has done, the steps we have taken in light of the situation,” and assistance that can be given to OFW communities.

Meanwhile, Valte said OFWs maltreated by employers can “ask for assistance from MECO.” — LBG, GMA News
