Some Pinoys in Taiwan claim of harassment amid sea dispute




Some Filipinos in Taiwan are claiming some Taiwanese are harassing them days after last week's fatal shooting of a Taiwanese fisherman in disputed waters, a television report said Thursday morning.

In a phone-patch interview with GMA News' "Kape at Balita," a dometic Filipino helper in Taiwan said some market vendors refuse to sell food items to Filipinos.

"Tatanungin ka muna kung Pilipino ka, tapos kung sabihin mong 'oo ' di ka pagbibilhan," said the caller who only identified herself as "Kristina."  

Meanwhile, in a radio interview, Migrante International chairman Garry Martinez on Thursday said many Taiwan employers appeared to be understanding, but some Taiwanese residents had been holding rallies criticizing Filipinos.

"May isang dorm ng Pilipino sa Taiwan, nagra-rally ang Taiwanese national at may Pilipino doon pinagbabato kahapon (Wednesday). Medyo nakakatakot na," Martinez said in an interview on dzBB.

Also, he said some employers are fearing for their Filipino workers' safety. "Natatakot ang amo at hindi pinapalabas." 

On Wednesday, Taiwan froze the hiring of Filipino workers and cut "sister-city" ties of some cities in Taiwan with some cities in the Philippines.

The Philippines-Taiwan row stemmed from the fatal shooting of a Taiwanese fisherman last May 9 during an encounter in disputed waters.

It prompted Taiwan to issue demands that included an apology, compensation for the fisherman's family, punishing the guilty parties, and fishery cooperation talks. — Kakammpi
