MECO chief: Taiwan's recruitment ban may be lifted when emotions cool down

The recruitment of Filipino workers to Taiwan may have to wait until emotions over the fatal shooting of a 65-year-old fisherman in an encounter last May 9 cool down, the head of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office said Sunday.

MECO head Amadeo Perez Jr. said the sending of workers to Taiwan is still on hold as emotion there remains high, according to a report of state-run Philippines News Agency.

He was quoted in the PNA report as telling a local radio station in Dagupan City that the recruitment of workers will resume "when the situation becomes stable and emotions will cool down."

Perez also called on Filipinos wishing to seek work in Taiwan to wait for further developments.

Emotions remained high in Taiwan over the May 9 incident, with the MECO having verified at least two cases where Filipinos were attacked and injured by Taiwanese.

Perez said he has ordered his staff to monitor the harassment against OFWs by Taiwanese.

He also reiterated his advice to OFWs to go straight to their homes from work.

Meanwhile, Perez said the investigation of the May 9 incident is almost over, but investigators may still need to go to Taiwan to talk to the other crewmembers of the the Taiwanese boat involved.

The investigators will also inspect the boat itself, he added. — LBG, GMA News
