Pinoy lifeguard jailed after guest's drowning at UAE hotel pool
A Filipino lifeguard was jailed in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after the accidental drowning of a guest in the hotel pool.
The Dubai Misdemeanour Court convicted the 31-year-old lifeguard and sentenced him to jail for one month after determining that the drowning victim had been left unattended.
“The accused has been jailed for one month and fined Dh2,000 (P22,461). He will also be deported following the completion of his punishment,” the judge said in a report of the Gulf News site.
The judgment is subject to appeal within one week.
The prosecutors had charged the lifeguard for failing to do his job and acting negligently when he left the hotel’s swimming pool.
They said his negligence - a breach of safety and security measures - may have led to the accidental death of a 38-year-old Indian swimmer at the pool.
A Dubai Police forensic examiner confirmed that the victim had died of drowning.
In court, the Filipino pleaded not guilty, saying he made sure the Indian was swimming properly before he went down to the gym’s reception area to get some towels for the poolside.
The Filipino recounted how a Belgian teenage guest informed him that someone drowned in the pool.
The lifeguard then rushed back to the poolside, dove in, and dragged the Indian out of the pool.
The Filipino claimed that he administered first aid and asked a co-worker to call an ambulance.
The lifeguard said the Indian had used the pool about four times before the incident happened, adding that the Indian "was a good swimmer."
However, the Filipino also admitted that he made a mistaken by leaving the pool unsupervised.
