Pinoy nurse in UAE gets five-year sentence for killing fellow Pinoy

A United Arab Emirates (UAE) court this week sentenced a Filipino nurse to five years in jail for killing his fellow Filipino with a potato peeler after an argument last October.

The Dubai Court of First Instance handed down the sentence to the nurse, who attacked the victim following a quarrel over a woman at a party, Gulf News reported on Tuesday.

The nurse, 39, told the court that he did no intend to kill the victim and that he was sorry for what happened.

The Filipino will be deported after carrying out his sentence.

Monday's ruling is subject to appeal within 15 days.

Court records showed that the nurse invited some Filipinos, including the victim, for dinner in October 2012. However, he and the victim had an argument over a woman while they were drunk.

The Filipino nurse was arrested at the Dubai International Airport.

An Emirati police lieutenant said the nurse admitted fighting with the victim, and stabbed him after the victim mocked hi,m and criticized his girlfriend.

Another Filipino nurse who witnessed the incident said the stabbing occurred at the defendant's place.

The witness said he was not aware that a heated argument erupted between the victim and the defendant.

"I didn’t see the defendant stabbing the victim. However, I only saw a knife that the defendant used to cut lemons," the witness said in the report.

The witness said he said the victim bleeding on the floor, breathing heavily.

The witness then reported the matter to the police, and the defendant was arrested shortly afterwards.- VVP, GMA News
