The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said the Asia-Pacific region registered the highest voter turnout in the overseas absentee voting (OAV) held from April 13 to May 13.

“The highest voter turnout was recorded in the Asia Pacific Region with 50,171 voters,” DFA spokesman Raul Hernandez told GMA News Online via text on Wednesday.

Hernandez said the number of votes recorded in the other regions are:
  • Middle East and Africa: 31,165
  • Europe: 16,550, and
  • the Americas: 15,363.

Hernandez also noted a slight increase in the number of recorded votes on Wednesday, compared to Tuesday's figures.

“As of 2:00 p.m. today (Wednesday), the OAV Secretariat has recorded a total voter turnout of 113,249 or 11.45 percent of all registered overseas voters,” he said.

The DFA on Tuesday said total of 112,132 ballots cast by overseas-based Filipinos have so far been tallied in various diplomatic posts, barely meeting the government’s 80 percent target for this year’s elections.

This figure represents 11.34 percent of the total number of registered overseas voters, which stands at 988,384.

The voter turnout for the 2013 elections is a far cry from the 2010 figures. During the 2010 presidential elections, a voter turnout of 26.96 percent was recorded.

However, Hernandez said that the current turnout will still increase since “final figures are expected to be announced within the week.”

Poe, Liberal Party dominates

Meanwhile, senatorial candidate Grace Poe of the ruling Liberal Party (LP) is one of the favorite picks in the OAV ,according to GMA News stringer reports.

In France, over 750 votes were tallied with Poe garnering a hefty 520 votes. She is followed closely by LP allies Allan Peter Cayetano and Loren Legarda with 518 and 514 votes respectively.

LP candidates also took fourth to tenth places in the OAV and are ranked as follows: Chiz Escudero (513), Bam Aquino (494), Koko Pimentel (456), Ramon Magsaysay Jr. (428), Sonny Angara (377), Antonio Trillanes IV (366) and Risa Hontiveros (334).

Only United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) senatorial candidate Dick Gordon (316) made it safely at the eleventh spot while UNA's Gringo Honasan and LP's Jamby Madrigal tied it out at twelfth (286).

Kuwait, which only has an 8 percent voter turnout, has similar results with Poe leading the pack followed by Cayetano and Legarda.

Poe also leads vote canvassing in the United Kingdom followed by LP bets Aquino and Angara.

But in the United States, LP senatorial candidate Escudero tops the polls in New York and Los Angeles. Escudero is also No. 1 in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

Legarda also took the top spot in Chicago and Hong Kong while Cayetano was the best senatorial pick in the Netherlands. - VVP, GMA News
