DFA: Japan PM Abe to visit Philippines

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is set to visit Manila on July 26 to 27, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs.

In a statement, DFA said Abe will meet with President Benigno Aquino III during his visit from Friday to Saturday in Manila to discuss "bilateral cooperation and regional issues, and further advance the Strategic Partnership between the Philippines and Japan."

Abe's last visit to the Philippines was in December 2006, "during his first term as the head of the Japanese Government," it added.

Japan is one of only two strategic partners of the Philippines, DFA said.

"In 2012, Japan was the Philippines’ number one trade partner and provider of official development assistance as well as the second major source of approved investments and third source of tourist arrivals," it added.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries was established on July 23, 1956. Amanda Fernandez/KG, GMA News
