US, PHL discuss labor alliance for Pinoys in Guam

Philippine and US officials recently met to discuss a possible labor alliance that would benefit Filipino workers and immigrants in Guam.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said Friday that the US Department of Labor has expressed interest in formalizing the cooperation.

"The visiting officials discussed the US DOL's interest to formalize the existing cooperation between the Consulate General and the US DOL Wage and Hour Division, particularly its partnership in educating Filipino workers and immigrants in Guam regarding their rights under US labor laws," the DFA said in anews release on its website.

Acting Philippine Consulate General in Guam head and Consul Edgar Tomas Auxilian and Consul Maria Paz Cortes welcomed US DOL-WHD regional administrator Ruben Rosalez from the San Francisco Regional Office, District Director Terence Trotter from the US DOL-WHD Honolulu District Office and Assistant District Director Patrick Candoleta of the US DOL-WHD Guam Field Office.

Since 2007, the US DOL-WHD Guam Field Office has been participating in the Consulate General's post-arrival orientation seminars, the DFA said.

"As such, the US DOL is looking into formalizing this alliance through a memorandum of agreement to be signed between the Consulate General and the Honolulu District Office," it said. — BM, GMA News
