Three abducted Pinoy nurses in Libya rescued — DFA spokesman

The three Filipino nurses abducted last Monday in Libya have been rescued by police, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Friday.

Citing an embassy report, Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez said one female and 2 male Filipino nurses were seized on July 8 at about 9 p.m. in downtown Sebha by a Libyan male and were taken to a car in an isolated area at the outskirts of the city.

Hernandez said the abduction was seen by the victims' frequent Libyan taxi driver, who informed the victims' other colleagues in the hospital.

The information was then relayed to Philippine Ambassador Oscar Orcine, who immediately contacted the police in Sebha for help.

At about 10 p.m. Monday, one male nurse was able to escape and sought help from a Libyan family who called in the police.

Hernandez said the other 2 nurses were traced and rescued at 11:15 p.m. The three were brought to the police station for debriefing.

After the debriefing, the nurses went to their accommodation at the hospital. There was no immediate information on the abductors.

“The nurses were reportedly shaken but unharmed,” Hernandez said, adding the victims will be going to the Libyan capital of Tripoli to rest.

Hernandez said the embassy is awaiting the official report from the police and will bring the matter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure better security for Filipinos who are working mostly in Libya’s healthcare sector.  — RSJ, GMA News
