After Eid'l Fitr, PHL schools in Saudi Arabia to mark Buwan ng Wika

With the month of Ramadan nearing its end, Filipino schools in Saudi Arabia are preparing to observe another month – Buwan ng Wika (Language Month).

The month-long celebration seeks to help encourage awareness and highlight the importance of the Filipino language, Arab News reported.

“Philippine schools in Riyadh should celebrate this event even though we are not in our country because we are, after all, Filipinos wherever we go,” Arab News quoted language teacher Jesus Guinto Jr. as saying.

Guinto, 30, teaches at the Second Philippines International School (SPIS).

Even students of other nationalities will take part in the activities, he said.

“Non-Filipino students will not be required or forced to participate but we will try to encourage them to join the activities to inspire them to appreciate the Filipino culture and traditions,” he said.

Al-Danah International School principal Paz Bea said activities for the month will include "poem recitation, declamation contests, singing contests, speech, choir and other forms of oral and written activities that will involve the use of the Filipino language.”

On the other hand, some Philippine schools in Riyadh may not be able to participate the whole month, while others will refrain from the celebration. — LBG, GMA News
