Palace: Contingency plans ready for OFWs losing jobs in Taiwan

Malacañang on Sunday reassured overseas Filipino workers in Taiwan that contingency plans are in place if they lose their jobs because of a continued freeze on the hiring of Filipino workers there.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said contingency plans by the Department of Labor and Employment include exploring other “markets.”

“The DOLE has already made contingency plans... (for) our workers who are in Taiwan. The secretary has talked at length on whatever measures, (and) that includes exploring other markets should OFWs be inclined to move to other markets,” she said on government-run dzRB.

Earlier this year, Taiwan imposed a freeze on the hiring of new Filipino workers there, in the wake of an incident at the Balintang Channel last May 9.

A Taiwanese fisherman was killed in the incident, prompting Taiwan to demand an apology from the Philippine government, as well as talks on a fishery agreement.

Earlier reports quoted a recruitment agency officer as saying some 4,000 Filipino workers in Taiwan may lose their jobs each month because Taiwanese employers continue to refuse to extend their job contracts.

The reports said Taiwan is hiring workers from other Southeast Asian countries, including Myanmar and Cambodia, to replace the 4,000 Filipinos whose contracts were not renewed. — LBG, GMA News
