Pinoy artist in Italy honored for short film on domestic workers

A young Filipino artist in Italy has been recognized for his efforts in "strengthening appreciation" for Filipino immigrants there.

The Philippine Embassy in Rome honored Paul Alex M. Samaniego last February 27 as part of the National Arts Month.

He was recognized particularly for COLF, which won second place in the Video Art category at the 2013 New Florence Biennale.

COLF is the abbreviated term for collaborative familiare, meaning domestic worker.

The 15-minute video, created wholly by Samaniego, was shown at the Embassy as part of his recognition ceremony.

Samaniego's work draws from his experiences as the son of Filipino migrant workers, who immigrated to Italy in the 80's as domestic workers. He himself became a domestic worker, trading in a career in visual advertising to "find inspiration" for his works and to "trace his roots.”

Philippine diplomat Leila Lora-Santos congratulated Samaniego for his efforts and his parents for raising "an inspiration" to Filipino youths in Italy.

A graduate from the Via di Ripetta Art School in Rome, Samaniego is a mixed-media artist who combined photography with traditional art in order to create his pieces Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
