Guam governor declares June as PHL Independence Month

June will be Philippine Independence Month in Guam, thanks to a proclamation by Guam Governor Eddie Calvo, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday.

The DFA said Philippine Consul General to Guam Bayani Mangibin attended a ceremony at the Ricardo Bordallo Governor’s Complex in Adelup Point where Calvo signed Proclamation 2014-055.

“On Philippine Independence Day, we celebrate the legacy of a great people, with a great history, who are now working to make the world a better place. During the month of June, we thank Filipinos all over the world, including on Guam, for bringing the wisdom of their ancestors, the spirit of bayanihan, and their love for life to their new homes,” the DFA quoted Calvo as saying in the proclamation.

Calvo also lauded Filipinos for continuing the tradition of their ancestors – "the same bravery and courage it took to break free from the shackles of oppression and declare their independence on June 12, 1898.”

He also cited the continuing economic growth of the Philippines and the prosperity accompanying it.

This is the second straight year Calvo issued such a proclamation to note the close historic ties between the Philippines and Guam.

"Thousands of Filipino-Guamanians have set their roots deep in our paradise – and for that, they are part of our island family. The Philippine economy is getting stronger and stronger. And as the tide rises for the Philippines, so grows Guam’s economy," Calvo said.

For his part, Mangibin thanked Calvo for acknowledging the contributions of Filipinos in Guam to its progress.

He presented the governor with a book about Mandaue, one of our most progressive cities in the Philippines.

Last April, the Mandaue local government passed a resolution expressing the city’s intent “to officially forge a Twinning Agreement and Sisterhood Relation with Guam.”

The DFA said the Philippine Consulate General in Agana has forwarded a copy of the resolution to Calvo's office for consideration. Joel Locsin/KBK, GMA News
