DFA records final overseas voter turnout of 118,752

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Wednesday recorded a final overseas voter turnout of 118,752 or about 16 percent of all registered voters abroad.

There were 975,263 registered overseas voters and of this figure, 237,504 were put on inactive list for not participating in previous polls.

The highest voter turnout was recorded in the Asia-Pacific region with 51,312 voters followed by the Middle East and Africa with 32,378, the Americas with 18,057 and finally Europe with 17,005, Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez said.

The top 10 diplomatic posts that registered the most number of voters are: Hong Kong (28,260),  Singapore (8,036), Riyadh (6,851), Jeddah (3,648), Los Angeles (3,628), Dubai (3,545), Abu Dhabi (3,337), Milan (3,227), Kuwait (3,203), and Rome (2,870).

Philippine officials admitted that certain limitations such as political apathy, residence status of workers, and physical location to polling places resulted to the dismal turnout of voters.

Hernandez added that presidential elections tend to generate more interest among overseas Filipinos than senatorial elections. - VVP, GMA News

China ships maintain presence in key West Philippine Sea areas --- Michael Punongbayan - The Philippine Star

STAR / Michael Varcas MANILA, Philippines — While Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) have decreased in number, they have maintained a presence in three key land features where naval and coast guard ships have intensified operations in the past seven days, according to the Philippine Navy. Social media seen as cause of rising intermarriages --- Helen Flores - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) sees social media as the main reason for the rising number of Filipinos marrying or becoming partners of foreign nationals. In 2022, the CFO recorded 6,854 marriages or partnerships with foreign nationals, a 40.1 percent increase from the 4,891 “intermarriages” recorded in 2021. “First of all, what we see in the increase in the marriage rate of Filipinos or Filipinos with foreign partners is because of social media, (that) is number one; matchings; letters, introduction of their friends,” CFO chairperson Romulo Arugay said at the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon public briefing yesterday.
