10 former OFWs pass DepEd screening test for teachers

Ten former overseas Filipino workers are now qualified to teach after passing a screening process for a government program to bring OFWs back to work in the country, a MalacaƱang official on Sunday said.

According to Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr., Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz was advised by DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro that the first batch of 10 teachers passed the Education department's screening process and may start teaching.

The "Sa Pinas, Ikaw ang Ma'am/Sir" project is part of the National Reintegration Program for OFWs.

"Pinagtutulungan ito ng DOLE at DepEd upang bigyan ng pagkakataon ang mga gurong nagsilbing OFWs na maglingkod sa kanilang pinag-aralan at pinaghandaang bokasyon bilang tagapaghubog ng katauhan ng mga kabataang Pilipino," Coloma said over state-run dzRB.

DOLE is asking DepEd to allot at least 300 positions for OFWs who want to go back to teaching, Coloma said.

There are about 39,000 vacant Teacher I positions for this year, Coloma said, citing DepEd data.— Kathryn Mae P. Tubadeza/JDS, GMA News
