OWWA to honor outstanding OFW families Friday
Over 30 finalists are vying for the 2014 Most Outstanding OFW Family Award (MOFYA ) to be given on Friday, January 23, by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).
According to OWWA Administrator Rebecca Calzado, there are 34 regional winners — 17 land-based and 17 sea-based — from the selection that started September last year.
“The 34 OWWA Regional winners automatically qualify as finalists to the National awards to be held in the afternoon of 23 January 2015, at the Blue Leaf Filipinas, ParaƱaque City,” the OWWA said in a statement Wednesday.
At the national level, two winners, one from the land-based and sea-based categories, shall be chosen from among all regional winners.
There will also be two special awards: the “Outstanding Achievement in Community Projects” and the “Outstanding Achievement in Entrepreneurship.” These titles will be conferred among the deserving finalists.
“We are truly proud of all our MOFYA awardees, both past, the new roster as well as the future winners, because they exemplify what every OFW aspires for—success both in their work stints abroad and a happy, fulfilled family life,” Calzado said.
Criteria
According to Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz, who chairs the board of judges, the criteria for the selection of the regional and national MOFYA awardees include:
- wholesomeness of the family,
- success in their profession,
- success in business and financial management, and
- civic or community involvement or leadership.
Baldoz said that “best practices” among nominees shall also be given points such as unity and solidarity among family members, and adherence to traditional Filipino values.
"MOFYA exemplifies family solidarity among Filipinos who, despite distance, continue to show support to one another," she added.
Prizes
The two grand winners will each receive a trophy and a cash prize of P500,000.00 plus refrigerator.
In addition, two special awards will be given plaque of recognition and a cash prize of 100,000.00 to the winner for the “Most Outstanding Achievement in Entrepreneurship,” plus one refrigerator, and P100,000.00 plus refrigerator for the winner for the most “Outstanding Achievement in Community Projects.”
Meanwhile, each of the 34 Regional winners will receive a cash prize of P40,000.00.
All MOFYA finalists/nominees will also be given a MOFYA trophy, plus P100,000.00 insurance coverage for two family members per family.
Calzado added that she encourage other OWWA members to participate in the future search for MOFYA, to serve as their “legacy” to their children and the generations after them. —KBK, GMA News
