Urban poor group presses gov't on housing

MANILA - Hundreds of members of the urban poor group Kadamay marched in Bulacan on Tuesday to press for the award of government housing units to the homeless.
Kadamay wants unoccupied housing units meant for uniformed personnel to be given instead to the urban poor.
Carrying placards, the protesters marched from Pandi to Balagtas. They also asked authorities to give them water and electricity.
President Rodrigo Duterte on May 16 signed a joint resolution of Congress that approved the distribution of unoccupied housing units to other qualified beneficiaries, such as informal settlers and underprivileged families, among others.
Kadamay said 54,000 units are up for distribution.
Last year, some Kadamay members took over some idle housing units in Pandi that were built for uniformed personnel. Duterte allowed them to keep the units, promising better alternatives for the policemen and soldier
