Financial assistance to OFWs repatriated from Libya widened to include earlier returnees

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) on Tuesday extended its financial asistance package to Filipino workers who repatriated from Libya earlier than July 20.

Signed by OWWA board members and Labor Secretary Rosalinda D. Baldoz, Resolution No. 008 allows Filipinos who voluntarily repatriated from May 29 to July 19, 2014 to claim a P10,000 Financial Relief Assistance Package (FRAP).

It was extended because Filipinos who repatriated from May to July were previously not covered by FRAP, which was only granted to those subject to mandatory repatriation from July 20 onwards.

Alert Level 3 (Voluntary Repatriation) was in place before July, when it was raised to Alert Level 4(Mandatory Repatriation) due to its "extremely unstable" situation.

While OWWA has released P42.8 million to 4,728 repatriates as of October 30, some Filipinos chose to stay in the North African country, fearing joblessness in the Philippines.

However, others continue to avail of the government's repatriation program, with 52 returning from Libya on October 18 and 19. — Rie Takumi/BM, GMA News
