Pinoy group brings consular services to kababayans in Al Ain

AL AIN, United Arab Emirates — An outreach program conducted by a Filipino group here last month was attended by more or less 200 Filipinos.

Al Ain is located 160 km east of Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s capital. It would take almost two hours going there and another two hours coming back.

The program, conducted by the Filipino Community, Al Ain (FilCom, Al Ain) last October 31, aimed to bring the services of the Philippine embassy in Abu Dhabi to Filipinos who have no or limited time to go to the capital.

“As per our ambassador, they are planning to have the outreach program every month in Al Ain [to] give priorities and support to our programs and activities in the future,” said Nelson Nico, executive chairman of FilCom, Al Ain, via email.

Ambassador Grace Relucio-Princesa graced the event along with the embassy’s staff.

Aside from extending the services of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) to OFWs here, the embassy also offered overseas absentee voting registration and a financial literacy workshop called Pinoy Worldwide Initiative for Investment, Savings and Entrepreneurship, or Pinoy Wise.

“Pumunta ako dito dahil dun sa financial literacy program. Para maliwanagan kung paano dapat gamitin yung pera natin dito at matulungan yung pamilya natin sa Pilipinas ng hindi ma-waste yung pera natin habang nagtatatrabaho pa tayo,” Roger Albao, 43, a nurse in Tawam Hospital, said.

Some of the residents in the city also came to help and support the event.

“Malayo kasi ang Abu Dhabi. Ilang oras din ang biyahe. Tapos, kukuha pa ng appointment,” Sophaira Lao, 36, a volunteer, said.
