2 more Pinoys from MidEast under observation for possible MERS-CoV

Two more Filipinos who just came from the Middle East are currently confined in hospitals to check if they are positive for the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus or MERS-CoV.

A report on “24 Oras” Monday said the two are a Cebu Pacific Air flight attendant who just came from Saudi Arabia and a domestic helper from Jordan.

The report said the flight attendant, who underwent medical checkup on February 11, is currently at an isolation room in a private hospital in General Santos City.

Citing the city health office, the report said the condition of the flight attendant has since improved and there is no confirmation yet that the patient has MERS-CoV.

In a statement, Cebu Pacific Air confirmed that one of its cabin crew has showed flu-like symptoms and is now undergoing medical observation.

It said it is willing to extend assistance to health authorities as it waits for the results of the medical observation.

Meanwhile, the domestic helper from Jordan was confined at a hospital in Cotabato City after she showed symptoms of MERS-CoV, which included high fever, coughs, difficulty in breathing and loose bowel movement, the same report said.

It said the domestic helper has been confined since February 12.

The “24 Oras” report also said health authorities are searching for two foreigners who arrived in the country on February 1 via Saudi Airline flight 8-60, the same flight that brought home the first confirmed MERS-CoV case — a pregnant Filipina nurse — to the country.

The two foreigners reportedly went to Palawan, a known tourist destination.

According to the report, health workers had visited 88 of the over 100 accredited resorts in the MIMAROPA Region in search of the two foreigners.

"Ang bilin namin, in any case, sa mga bisita nila dun ay mayroon magkasakit ay i-report agad sa amin," said Dr. Eduardo Janairo, director of the Department of Health in the MIMAROPA Region.

Over 100 other passengers who were on the same flight have already been checked and cleared by health authorities. The nurse, meanwhile, is under quarantine at a government facility in Muntinlupa City. —KBK, GMA News
