Bishop calls for honesty among Pinoys from countries with MERS-CoV cases

A Catholic prelate on Monday called on Filipinos from countries with reported MERS-CoV cases to be honest about their health when going home to the Philippines.

In an interview, Bataan Bishop Ruperto Santos said Filipinos coming from countries with reported cases of MERS-CoV should honestly fill out the form being distributed at the airport about their health.
 
“Dapat fill [out] nila at ilagay tama nilang nararamdaman,” Santos said. “Kapag may nararamdaman na kayo [na] ubo, lagnat, pananakit ulo, ipaalam agad.”

Santos is the chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines’ Episcopal Commission on Migrants and Itinerant People.

He made the call a week after Philippine health authorities confirmed the first case of MERS-CoV, or Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus, in the country. The patient is a pregnant Filipino nurse from Saudi Arabia.

Santos said the Catholic Church is helping the government in preventing the spread of the dreaded disease by reminding the people to be cautious and aware of the effects of the virus.
 
“Ang ginagawa ng simbahan ay awareness and then proper coordination with authorities,” he said.

Following the first confirmed MERS-CoV in the Philippines, the Department of Health (DOH) is currently monitoring several people who have close contacts with the nurse who tested positive of the deadly virus.
 
They are currently under quarantine at the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Muntinlupa City.  —KBK, GMA News
