Minimum wage set for Filipino household workers in Oman

Philippine officials in Oman have issued a memorandum setting the mandatory minimum wage for Filipino household service workers there.

According to a report on the Times of Oman, Filipino household workers will get a minimum of OMR160 (roughly P18,000) starting March 1.

The memorandum, dated February 15, was in compliance with the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration's (POEA) rules and regulations regarding minimum wages in Oman.

Labor attaché Nasser S. Mustafa said complaints about salary violations have also prompted the Philippine Embassy there to issue the memorandum to recruiting agencies and employers.

Upgraded contracts for domestic workers were introduced by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in November along with other initiatives to improve the conditions of foreign workers in all its member states, among them Oman.

These contracts seek to give foreign workers annual leaves, eight-hour work shifts, weekly dayoffs, and the right to live outside their employer's households.

Employers are also barred from confiscating their passports and obliged to pay their end-of-service indemnity and overtime pay.

Philippine Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz then said the unified contracts could "end soon the days of abuse and exploitation" faced by Filipino household workers in the Middle East. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
