43 stranded Pinoy fishermen in Jakarta now home - DFA

The 43 Filipino fishermen who were earlier detained in Indonesia for six months over alleged illegal fishing are now back in the Philippines, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday.

In a statement, the DFA said the fishermen arrived in the country on Monday, February 23.

The 43 Pinoy fishers were apprehended last year in Ternate, North Maluku for allegedly fishing in Indonesian waters.

At the time of their arrest, the fishermen did not possess any travel documents.

The fishermen told authorities that they were abandoned by their employer whom they also accused of maltreatment.

Likewise, the fishermen said that the master of their fishing vessel, a certain Alan Abi, evaded arrest.

According to the DFA, the Pinoy fishermen intend to file a complaint against their employer for maltreatment and abandonment. — Rouchelle R. DInglasan/RSJ, GMA News
