Oman lost interest in hiring unskilled workers from Bangladesh

Oman lost its interest in hiring unskilled workers from Bangladesh saying that they developed the habit of becoming undocumented by running away from their workplaces.

Officials told New Age that Bangladeshi workers’ migration to Oman would continue to fall as it in the last three years.
Visiting Omani officials informed their Bangladesh counterparts about the problems created by them in Oman.
The two sides discussed the issues at a two-day meeting of the Bangladesh-Oman Joint Working Group on recruitment of workers that ended at Probashi Kalyan Bhaban in the capital Wednesday.

EWOE Ministry secretary in charge Rownaq Jahan led the Bangladesh side at the talks while the Omani team was led by Saleh Aayil Khamis Al-Aamri, adviser to the Omani minister of manpower for labour welfare.
The Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment ministry officials said that about 51,000 Bangladeshi workers fled their workplaces in Oman in last five years and became undocumented.

They said that Bangladeshi workers became prone to fleeing their workplaces mainly due to under payment and enticement.

Currently, about 7.5 lakh Bangladeshis work in Oman, they said.
Later, a senior official told New Age that the Omani officials asked Bangladesh to send skilled and knowledgeable workers.

Omani officials requested Bangladesh to ensure the workers were given their job contracts a few days before their departure for Oman so that they understand the contracts before signing them.

Bureau of Manpower, employment and Training director general Salim Reza, EWOE Ministry additional secretary Ahmed Munirus Saleheen and senior officials from ministry, Wage Earners’ Welfare Board, Bangladesh Overseas Employment Service Limited, attended the meeting.

Over 14.4 lakh workers migrated to Oman since 1976, according to the BMET.

BMET records show that Oman slashed recruiting Bangladeshi workers since 2016.

Around 1, 88, 000 workers migrated to Oman in 2016, around 89,000 in 2017 and around 72,000 in 2018.
