Pinoys in Christchurch, New Zealand told to stay indoors after mosque shooting



Filipinos living in Christchurch, New Zealand were advised to stay indoors following a mass shooting at a mosque on Friday, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.
The Philippine Embassy in Wellington is closely monitoring the situation, the DFA said, adding no Filipino casualty has so far been reported.
"Ambassador Jesus Gary Domingo is in close coordination with the Philippine Honorary Consulate In Christchurch and leaders of the Filipino community," a DFA statement said.
"The embassy has also advised the almost 5,000 members of the Filipino community in Christchurch to remain indoors."
In an interview with GMA News Online, Domingo said there is "no indication so far of Pinoy casualties."
"No active shootings anymore, one shooter suspect in custody, others may still be at large. City is still in lockdown. We are continuing to monitor," Domingo said.
Witnesses said they saw a man enter the Masjid Al Noor mosque in central Christchurch where dozens of shots were heard, reports said.
Police have yet to determine the number of fatalities.
"The Philippines stands in solidarity with New Zealand following the tragic shootings in Christchurch this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones of those who lost their lives in the tragedy," the DFA said. — Michaela Del Callar/RSJ, GMA News
