Lawmakers should study tightening laws on firearm control, Sen. Panfilo Lacson said Wednesday, likening the crime situation in the country to that of the "wild, wild west."
Lacson, a former national police chief, cited recent shooting incidents, including that of a policeman who was gunned down in EDSA on Tuesday, as well as fatal attacks on politiciansjournalists, judges and lawyers.
'pag nakakapanood ka ng news, parang wild, wild west na ang ating bansa," he said, referring to the rampant violence in 19th century America.
(The 18th Congress should focus on gun control because when you watch the news everyday, it seems that our country has become like wild, wild west.)
Lacson said he previously studied a proposal to limit firearm permits to policemen and soldiers.
(We have become used to seeing guns, we no longer pay attention. But if our mindset is different and we would report those carrying guns because we presume them to be outlaws, then crimes using guns would be reduced.)
Law enforcers, however, must ensure the public's protection if their right to carry firearms is limited, he said.
