Pinay worker in Jordan killed a month before two-year contract ends


A Filipina domestic helper was killed along with her employer in Jordan earlier this month, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said Tuesday.
Felma Maramag's body was repatriated to Cagayan over the weekend and her death benefits are currently being readied by the government to be given to her family, Bello said.
A news release from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) said Bello has instructed OWWA Administrator Leo Hans J. Cacdac  to facilitate the release of the benefits to Maramag's family. 
"Airport assistance, including documentation processes, was extended to the family of  the deceased by the OWWA Region 2 officials, who likewise attended the wake of the late Filipino migrant worker," the OWWA statement read.
According to reports reaching the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the bodies of Maramag and her employer were discovered by a police officer who responded to a call from the Civil Defense Directorate of Jordan regarding a fire incident where the deceased OFW was employed.
The police officer, the report added, brought the bodies of the two to the hospital.
However, upon autopsy, it was revealed that Maramag, who is from Tuguegarao, died due to blunt force trauma to the head. She also sustained a stab wound on her head, and she had a broken skull as well as bruises all over her body.
Maramag was killed on February 5, a day after she celebrated her 36th birthday. Her two-year contract  in Jordan would have been completed by next month, according to OWWA.
Under OWWA rules, the family of a murdered OFW is entitled to avail of the full coverage accorded to an active member of the agency, which includes P200,000.00 as  death benefit, P20,000.00 as burial assistance, scholarship  for the deceased's children, and livelihood assistance amounting to P15,000.00 for the surviving spouse.
Maramag, who left behind a 15-year-old daughter, will be interred on Tuesday, February 28. —KBK, GMA News
