Pinoy scholars share tips on how to win scholarships abroad

Filipino students who earned scholarships abroad gathered at a recent symposium to share tips on how and where to apply for international scholarships to more than 150 Filipino students.
Current and former Filipino scholars who studied in Japan, Australia, South Korea and Taiwan shared their experiences at De La Salle University - Manila last February 4 during the the 2017 Filipino International Researchers, Scholars, Trainees Symposiums (FIRSTS).
Now on its third year, FIRSTS gave workshops on Winning Scholarship Abroad in the field of Social and Natural Science and Career Options in International Organizations.
FIRSTS also conducted a workshop on Early Career Academics and Researchers in Natural Science and Engineering.
The symposium is an effort by Alyansa ng Nagkakaisang Iskolar sa ibang Bansa (ANIB) to combat "brain drain" and encourage Filipino scholars to use the knowledge they gained abroad in the Philippines.
"Hinihikayat namin kayong mag-aral sa ibang bansa, hindi upang manatili doon ngunit bumalik dito sa ating bayan. Paunlarin ang sarili, paunlarin ang bayan," UP Prof. Ronel Laranjo, a founding member of ANIB, said in his opening remarks.
ANIB is an alliance founded by Pinoy Iskolar sa Korea, Inc. (PIKO) and the Association of Filipino Students in Japan (AFSJ).
They were joined by Association of Filipino Scholars in Taiwan (AFST) in 2015 and Australian National University Filipino Association (ANUFA) in 2016.
FIRSTS was organized by ANIB in cooperation with DLSU and sponsored by University of the Philippines Korea Research Center (UPKRC) and Japan Association for Promotion of Internationalization (JAPI). —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News

Pixabay MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has expanded its list of medicines which are exempt from the value added tax (VAT). Revenue Memorandum Circular No. 17-2024 released by the tax bureau exempted 21 medications following the endorsement of the Food and Drug Administration. The VAT-exempted medications on the list are for conditions such as cancer, diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, kidney disease, mental illness and tuberculosis.
