Guimaras, OWWA honor migrant workers in 1st OFW Night
As part of the month long celebration of Manggahan Festival this year, the Province of Guimaras and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration Regional Welfare Office VI launched the first OFW Night, a program which salutes overseas Filipino workers in the Mango Capital of the Philippines and their contribution to the Philippine society.
According to Guimaras Governor Hon. Samuel T. Gumarin, the event is dedicated to OFWs and their milestone in staying committed to the progress of the province.
“Guimaras is more than just mangoes – this is what Mangahan Festival promotes. The provincial government continues to strengthen the economic drivers since we believe that it is one way to establish stability of our areas of priority,” Gumarin said.
Mr. Lito dela Banda, Chief Labor and Employment Office of DOLE Region 6, also attended the event and emphasized that OFWs are one of the major contributors to the economic improvement of the province.
“Ang mga OFW daw dito sa Guimaras ay hindi masyadong naririnig pero nararamdaman dahil kayo ay isa sa economic drivers ng probinsya,” dela Banda said.
In addition, OWWA RWO VI launched the Model OFW Family of the Year Awards during the OFW night. Mr. Reynold T. Pigar, OWWA RWO VI Chief of the Programs and Services Division, presented the criteria and mechanics of MOFYA.
He also added that the affair was just the beginning of a grand celebration for OFWs in Guimaras in the future.
“Kagaya ng narinig natin sa mga kanta kanina, ang paglalakbay ng OFW ay walang katapusan dahil sa patuloy na pagtulong natin sa kaunlaran ng buhay ng ating pamilya, n gating probinsya, at n gating bayan. OWWA is committed to support OFWs and their families in Guimaras,” Pigar said.
The event also highlighted performances prepared by members of the Guimaras OFWs and Seaman Multi-purpose Cooperative and the Poblacion Jordan OFW Association. Furthermore, it included an awarding ceremony which recognized three outstanding members of the OFW multi-purpose cooperative.
