Pinoy among finalists in Atkins Environmental Photographer of the Year

A Filipino worker in Kuwait who is also an amateur photographer was among those shortlisted for the 2015 Atkins Environmental Photographer of the Year exhibition.

Rizalde Cayanan's photo called "Sandstorm in the City" was one of the 12 entries chosen as a preview of the yearly competition by England's Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM).

article on International Business Times said Cayanan's photo captured the sandstorm that shut down Kuwait's International Airport in 2011 and reduced visibility to less than 500 meters or, in some areas, no visibility at all.

In a public post on Facebook last May 30, Cayanan said his inclusion in CIWEM's exhibition was his "highest achievement" in photography so far and thanked his friends and family for their support.

Nigel Hendley, CIWEM interim chief executive and judge, told BBC News that this year's iteration featured entries "with thought provoking topics" and challenged judges to "question the impact" of humans on the planet.

“There is an extraordinary sense of resilience in many of the images selected this year, as we all adapt to the challenges and conditions of our environment across the globe," Hayley Skipper, Forestry Commission England arts development curator, told BBC.

Cayanan's work will be featured along the other entrants at the Royal Geographical Society in London, UK from June 22 to July 10 before going on tour by the Forestry Commission England from July 18 to September 7.

Winners of the various categories will be announced in a private ceremony on June 25. Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
