Region VI OWWA Scholars’ Training

Region VI OWWA Scholars’ Training
A total of 20 scholars from the Education for Development Scholarship Program, OFW Dependents Scholarship Program, and Education and Livelihood Assistance Program attended the learning support mechanism training conducted by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration on May 15, 2015 in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.
The activity included a focus group discussion activity where the participants shared their problems as a student and a child of an OFW; their coping mechanisms on how they addressed their problems; and the common issues that they usually encounter.
The scholars’ conference also highlighted a discussion on peer pressure by Miss Rizza Joy H. Mapa, OWWO I, who related the common difficulties faced by students.
“There are two kinds of pressure: positive and negative. Peer pressure can be a good learning experience, or it may lead to bad decisions. The key is to deal with negative peer pressure with confidence. To be yourself, make your own decisions regardless of what others think, listen to your gut, and feel comfortable in saying no,” Mapa said.
Miss Karla Marie Peruelo, a former EDSP scholar who is now employed as an instructor in the University of San Agustin – Bacolod City, also provided her experiences and insights.
“Scholars should be grateful to their parents and family members for their love and guidance and likewise to OWWA for the financial support. We must also be hard working.  Hard work is an important factor in becoming successful in your chosen field,” Peruelo said.
A reflection activity where the scholars voiced out their learning wrapped up the activity.

The scholars share the problems and concerns that they usually encounter and how they can overcome them.

The scholars display their outputs after the reflection activity wherein they illustrated their future selves.
