Indonesian exec says no word yet from PHL regarding Veloso testimony

The Philippine government has yet to give a definite answer to Indonesia's Attorney General's Office regarding Mary Jane Veloso's testimony against her alleged recruiter.

AGO spokesperson Tony Spontana told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday that the Philippines has yet to decide whether they want Veloso to testify via video conference and or in-person through its investigators.

Veloso, 30, was granted temporary reprieve from the death sentence last week. She was convicted for smuggling heroin to Indonesia in 2010 although she claimed she had no knowledge of her bag's content when she was arrested and instead blamed her recruiter, Maria Kristina Sergio.

Spontana said the Philippines government had previously asked for Veloso to testify from May 8 to 14.

The Indonesian government has previously refused to let Veloso return to the Philippines to testify against Sergio, who has already turned herself in to authorities.

Veloso was arrested at the Yogyakarta Airport in April 2010 after 2.6 kilograms of heroin were found in a suitcase allegedly given to her by Sergio.

Sergio is facing charges of illegal recruitment, human trafficking and estafa.

Veloso was the only drug convict spared from execution last April 29. The AGO has yet to decide whether she will be executed separately or with the next batch of death row inmates.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo clarified that their government only postponed--not annulled--the execution of Veloso as a response to the request of the Philippine government for her to testify as a witness against her recruiter. Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
