Pinay in UAE seeks help anew for daughter’s surgery

A Filipina in the United Arab Emirates is seeking help anew in raising funds for surgery that could save her one-year-old daughter's life.

Grace Carungay, 32, said her daughter Aleeyah needs a liver transplant but the procedure may have to be done in Taiwan, UAE-based news site Gulf News XPRESS reported.

“These seem like simple matters but I have no choice but to plead for people’s generosity. Through God’s grace, she has come this far, and all I need now are the funds to take care of my daughter to Taiwan, where she can undergo the surgery,” she said.

She said she would have to stay in Taiwan for three months during her surgery and follow-up. She said rent and living expenses may total about Dh40,000 (P485,463).

Carungay works as a receptionist at a facilities management firm in Abu Dhabi. Her monthly salary is Dh2,500 (P30,341).

Last year, Gulf News reported Aleeyah was diagnosed with biliary atresia, a liver disease that may prevent toxins and waste products from being carried out of the body.

Taiwan expenses

Carungay said she would not have sought help if the surgery would be done in the Philippines.

"Unfortunately, they can only carry out the transplant in Manila in June, which will be too late for Aleeyah. Her condition is deteriorating every day and she needs the surgery this month,” she said.

Gulf News said the child has already been admitted to a hospital in Manila many times, and has reportedly vomited blood.

So far, one of Carungay's sisters has agreed to be a donor for a liver transplant. A member of Abu Dhabi’s ruling family also offered to cover the cost of surgery and travel to Taiwan for Grace, Aleeyah and her sister.

While she is "terribly grateful" for this donation, Grace said she now appeals to the people of the UAE for their generosity "in helping me cross this last stage of securing my daughter’s life."

"Every dirham counts,” she said.  Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
