OFWs in Middle East, Africa may register for 2016 elections online

OFWs in the Middle East and Africa may now use the i-Rehistro system to register for the 2016 national elections online.

Filipinos who wish to use the service may go to the i-Rehistro or Comelec website to fill out registration forms and schedule their appointment with the nearest embassy, foreign service post, or field registration site.

Registrants will need to print out and submit their accomplished forms during their appointment to proceed to biometrics capturing. Under the law, all voters must have their biometric data recorded.

Posts in the following areas will be equipped to implement iRehistro starting May 8:

Abu Dhabi
Abuja
Amman
Beirut
Cairo
Doha
Kuwait
Manama
Muscat
Nairobi
Pretoria
Riyadh
Tehran
Dubai
Jeddah

The Philippine embassy in Saudi Arabia received approval for i-Rehistro on May 7, while the trial period for the program ended in the DFA's Madrid post after an extended period of testing from 2014.

The online registration program was originally conceived to enhance efficiency by allowing "faster processing time resulting to potentially more registrants per day, with higher 'customer satisfaction'".

Filipinos aged 18 years or older during the thirty-day overseas voting period from April 9 to May 9, 2016 and who are not disqualified by law may use the service to register until October 31, 2015.  Rie Takumi/JDS, GMA News
