2 Pinoys get 3 months in UAE for trying to steal iPad, gadgets from store
A United Arab Emirates court on Sunday sentenced two Filipino salesmen to three months in jail for trying to steal electronic gadgets, including an iPad tablet, from the store they worked in last February.
The two pleaded guilty before the Dubai Court of First Instance to trying to steal an iPad, a wireless earphone and a security jacket, UAE news site Gulf News reported Monday.
“We are guilty, but we want to pay for the items that we took and settle this dispute,” said one of the Filipinos.
Presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi also ordered the two deported after serving their punishments. The ruling is subject to appeal in 15 days.
Prosecutors said the Filipinos abused their job and stole from their workplace at the hypermart at Mall of the Emirates.
Investigation showed the two Filipinos, aged 34 and 35, stole items worth Dh13,381 and tried to smuggle them out of their workplace in February.
But the hypermarket’s security guards thwarted the attempted theft after seeing the deed on surveillance cameras.
One of the two was seen on surveillance cameras pushing a trolley "in a suspicious manner" at 2 p.m. He was seen carrying an iPad in his hand and vanished from the CCTV screens. He then reappeared but had changed his clothes.
Security guards stopped him and accompanied him to a search room. The Filipino admitted taking the iPad, in collaboration with his fellow Filipino.
He said he went into the warehouse and handed the iPad to the other Filipino, who disappeared inside the warehouse and removed the bar code from the iPad. —Joel Locsin/KBK, GMA News
