Pinays in HK not homewreckers —Palace

Malacañang on Wednesday took offense at recent remarks made by a Hong Kong politician accusing Filipina migrant workers of seducing their male employers.

At a press briefing, presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda described as “fallacious” the conclusions made by lawmaker Regina Ip about Filipinas workers in Hong Kong.

“In this particular case, just because of one incident, this lawmaker  now concludes, on a general conclusion, that Filipinos are homewreckers,” Lacierda told reporters on Wednesday afternoon.

He added that it is “very unfair” for a Hong Kong politician to make such statements against Filipinas who leave their families in the Philippines to earn abroad.

“The Filipinos who are working there are doing a very noble job of providing and taking care of their little ones. To go outside and work, that’s leaving the care of their children. To Filipino domestic workers, that’s a very noble job. That’s a very difficult job,” Lacierda said.

Ip, a close adviser to the Hong Kong leader Leung Chun-ying, recently drew flak for calling Filipina domestic helpers “sexual resources for foreign men in Hong Kong.”

The Hong Kong politician, who is reportedly being tipped as the city’s future chief executive, also said she received “complaints from expatriate women... that Filipina domestic helpers seduce their husbands.”

Lacierda further said that the Department of Foreign Affairs has yet to convey to Malacañang any action in connection with Ip’s remarks.

Asked about the planned protest of some Filipina workers in Hong Kong, the Palace official said it is only natural for them to feel “insulted” and “aggrieved.” He did not say if the Philippine government supports these protest actions.
