Pinoy nurse in Singapore posts $10K bail on sedition charge
The Filipino nurse who was charged with sedition in Singapore over racial comments made on Facebook against Singaporeans has posted bail, GMA's “News TV Live” reported on Saturday.According to Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose, Ello Ed Mundsel Bello was released after he posted bail which was earlier reported to be $10,000 (roughly P440,000).He had been charged for referring to Singaporeans as "Stinkaporeans" and saying he would “kick out all Singaporeans and SG will be the new filipino [sic] state”.Singapore's Sedition Act punishes comments that “promote feelings of ill-will and hostility between different races or classes of the population of Singapore.”Bello, who has also been fired from the Tan Tock Seng Hospital over his comments, may be fined up to $5,000 and imprisoned for three years if convicted for sedition.He may also be fined the same amount and jailed for a year for his other offense, lying to the police.
The DFA assured the public that the Philippine post in Singapore will monitor the case and ensure that due process is followed and Bello's rights are observed. The pre-trial conference for the case is scheduled on April 21. — Andrei Medina/JDS, GMA News
