A court in Hong Kong sentenced an African man to nine years in jail for raping a Filipina domestic worker and ordered him to pay her HK$48,120 for her loss of income, a report on South China Morning Post said.
Kokou Afla Apelete was charged with one count of indecent assault and rape nearly two years after he assaulted the Filipina, who had to quit her job in the Philippines as a salesperson so that she can pursue the case.
The report said the Filipina refused proposals from Apelete to start a relationship with him on several occasions before she was raped on August 25, 2015. At that time, the victim was working for Apelete.
The report said Apalete molested the Filipina when he saw her cleaning the toilet while his wife was away. The victim reportedly tried to get away by agreeing to be hugged but she was followed to her room by Apelete and assaulted.
Justice Esther Toh Lye-ping of Hong Kong's High Court described the victim as "a small lady, five foot tall, less than 100 pounds heavy" who was easily overpowered by Apelete.
TheSCMP report said the victim went into the toilet afterward to tell a friend on Facebook about the incident, and ran out of Apelete's Tuen Man flat when police arrived.
The victim said the incident traumatized her. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
