Mary Jane’s ‘recruiter’ says she only tried to help Pinay now on Indonesia’s death row

The alleged recruiter of the Filipino woman now on death row in Indonesia denied being so, insisting that she only helped out May Jane Veloso financially.

In a phone interview with QRT on Thursday, Maria Cristina Sergio said she wasn't a recruiter and only helped get Mary Jane Veloso to Indonesia, where she is now facing a death sentence via firing squad after being caught with 2.6 kilograms of heroin at the Yogyakarta airport in 2010.

While they were neighbors, Sergio said she did not know Veloso and her husband, who came to their house to ask for help. Veloso's husband is a friend of Sergio's spouse.

In a separate interview with QRT, Veloso's mother, Celia, disputed Sergio's claim, maintaining that it was Sergio who recruited and made Mary Jane carry the luggage where the drugs were found.

Veloso's father, Cesar, even claimed that Sergio told them in front of other people that she is part of an international syndicate.

"Talaga pong dealer.

Asked to clarify who told them this, Veloso's parents replied, "Si Cristina."

The family said they are planning to file a case against Sergio, a separate report on 24 Oras said. Rose-An Jessica Dioquino/NB, GMA News
