Review ongoing for case of Pinay drug convict in Indonesia –DFA

The court is still reviewing the case of the Filipina drug courier who was sentenced to death in Indonesia, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Wednesday, amid reports on the imminent executions of two Australian drug convicts.

“[There will be] no execution while court is still hearing her case,” DFA spokesperson Charles Jose told GMA News Online in a text message.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo in January rejected the Philippine government's plea for clemency filed for the Filipina drug convict, prompting Manila to request for a judicial review — a request granted by Indonesia.

“Yes, request for clemency was rejected. But there's another legal remedy available — judicial review,” Jose said.

An earlier report indicated that there was no time frame for the review.

The Filipina, along with two Australians and a Nigerian convicted for the same offense, was among the death row prisoners who were transferred to the execution site at the Nusakambangan Island’s maximum-security facility despite appeals for clemency by their governments.

The woman, who flew in to Indonesia from Malaysia, was arrested by authorities at the Yogyakarta Airport on April 25, 2010 for allegedly trafficking of 2.6 kilograms of heroin. She entered Indonesia as a tourist.

In its request, the Philippine government is seeking the commutation of her sentence to life imprisonment.

Although the sentence was already upheld by the Supreme Court, Jose had earlier said all death penalty cases in Indonesia are entitled to at least one judicial review.

In many countries, such as Indonesia and China, trafficking of large quantities of prohibited drugs is punishable by death. Death penalty in Indonesia is carried out through firing squad.
