Pinoy father of 4 faces deportation in Canada

A Filipino father of four may soon be forced out of Canada as the country continues to cut down the number of service personnel working under its Temporary Foreign Workers Program.

David Gutierrez told CBC News that he was "very worried" for his job as he has yet to pass his Grade 12 Equivalency (GED) exam, a requirement for permanent residency through the provincial nominee program.

Greg Burrows, his employer, said Gutierrez didn't have enough time to take his exams before his work permit expires on March 31.

Since March 2013, Gutierrez has been taking classes at an adult learning center to improve his chances, a report on NG News said Monday.

Gutierrez's instructor said nerves and difficulty understanding questions had led to him failing several attempts at his GED exams.

More time

Burrows told CBC News that the federal government, which refused to renew the Gutierrez's permit, must give workers more time to prepare their requirements for permanent residency.

At least 10 of Burrows' employees managed to become permanent residents or enter the provincial nominee program.

Gutierrez sends 70 percent of his income back to his wife and children, aged five to 17, in the Philippines. The 42-year-old moved to Canada five years ago and maintains a managerial position at a fast food restaurant.

A report on NG News said Gutierrez managed to lift his "family into a middle class status" and send his children, one of whom has special needs, to a good school since his employment.

According to CBC News, employers in regions with high unemployment rates may not hire low-wage temporary foreign workers and must cap their employment at 10 percent by 2016. Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
