Parents of Pinay death row convict in Indonesia believe daughter is innocent

The parents of Mary Jane Veloso, the 30-year-old Filipina currently on death row in Indonesia for a drug-related case, believe she is innocent of the charges against her.

“Wala po talagang kasalanan 'yung anak ko. Mahirap lang po kami, pero 'di gagawin ng anak ko 'yun dahil pinalaki po namin 'yung mga anak namin [nang] maayos," said Celia, Mary Jane's mother, in a report on “24 Oras” Thursday.

Mary Jane's parents said the suitcase that contained 2.6 kilograms of heroin that was seized from her when she was arrested at the Yogyakarta Airport in April 2010 belonged to a friend who used her to smuggle illegal drugs.

Mary Jane's execution by firing squad was put on hold after the District Court of Yogyakarta found merit on the Philippine government's request for a judicial review. Her case has already been transmitted to the Indonesian Supreme Court.

“We are hopeful now that the case has been endorsed with the Supreme Court, [so that] will mean [that] there will be no execution until the judicial review has been completed and as long as the case is still being heard,” said Department of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Charles Jose in the report.

Celia welcomed this development.

“Masaya po ako dahil hindi po matutuloy 'yung bitay. Alam ko hong may awa ang Diyos na makakalaya po yung anak ko. Dahil sa totoo lang po, wala po kaming kinukunan, wala ho kaming kabuhayan,” she said.

Mary Jane's father, Cesar, is aware that the fight to save his daughter from the death sentence is not yet over.

“Hindi pa rin ho [kami gaanong masaya] dahil may hearing pa. Sabi nga ng anak ko, buti tinanggap yung apela nila sa kataas-taasang hukuman. Nananalangin kami na sana, pagkatapos yung hearing na 'yun laya na 'yung anak ko,” he said.

The DFA is hoping that Mary Jane's sentence will be downgraded to life imprisonment. Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
