Pinay nabbed over robbery try in Abu Dhabi

A debt-ridden Filipina was arrested after a foiled attempt to rob a money exchange establishment in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates over the weekend, UAE news sites reported Sunday.

The woman wore a veil and used a plastic toy gun but the robbery fell through when the toy backfired, Gulf News reported.

Gulf News described the Filipina as 33 years old, and carrying a knife when she tried to rob the establishment at Hamdan Street last Thursday.

Police cordoned off the area upon learning of the robbery.

An initial investigation showed the Filipina had been staying in the UAE illegally as her visa had expired.

Police said she had tried to disguise herself so she would not be recognized via closed-circuit television.

Debts

The Filipina confessed during interrogation she was trying to pay off a Dh140,000 debt.

She said she bought the toy gun from a nearby grocery store, and bought the abaya and her face and head covering from a local store.

A separate report on Khaleej Times said the advanced security system at the money exchange shop helped summon police.

“With the security system we have, we can get a police team within minutes if there is even an attempt to break in or rob an exchange center,” Nauman Illahi of Al Dhafra Exchange in Madinat Zayed commercial area said.  Joel Locsin/RSJ, GMA News
