PHL Embassy investigating deaths of three Pinoy youths in Sabah raid

The Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur is verifying the reported death of three Filipino youths during an immigration raid in Sabah last weekend.

In a statement, the embassy said a three-member team is now in Lahad Datu to look into the deaths.

"The consulate team met the next-of-kin of the three victims who are brothers Sunday afternoon and conferred with Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) and police authorities Monday morning. The team has asked for a full, impartial investigation, and to be furnished a copy of any police report," it said.

Last weekend, Malaysian news sites reported that three young Filipinos died during an operation conducted by the ESSCOM against undocumented individuals at the Lahad Datu public market.

According to the report, the three were brothers who suffocated when they hid in a narrow space under the central market along with dozens of others after seeing the raiding team. They were rushed to the hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival.

The brothers were illegally selling fish a few meters away from the market, the report said.

The embassy identified the victims as Nordin Akang, 16, Lahudin Nasir, 17, and Alex Nasir, 18, of Kampung Bakau in Lahad Datu.

The Philippine Embassy voiced concern about the incident and called for "humane treatment of undocumented individuals, including the manner by which operations are conducted in order to avoid unnecessary loss of lives."

According to the embassy, its team met the relatives of the victims on Sunday. The embassy also talked to the ESSCOM and police authorities on Monday, and asked for a "full, impartial investigation, and to be furnished a copy of any police report." — Joel Locsin and Trisha Macas/BM, GMA News
